In this culture some people may experience death and dying with difficult emotions such as shame, helplessness and fear.  Music-thanatology embraces death and dying as a natural passage and assists the dying and those close to them with musical support.  
 
Kelly Lockwood is a Certified Music-Thanatologist. She plays harp and sings to the dying, their friends, family and caregivers, as part of palliative care. Her practice takes her to the bedside of many people including cancer patients, people who are termed "unresponsive", children, Alzheimer's patients, people who are alone and those being taken off of life support technology.

As well as practicing music-thanatology in the Bay Area she plays music at weddings and memorial services.  Informed by music-thanatology she teaches harp and voice and offers Unfolding: A Musical Meditation for the general public to experience soothing melodies, gentle voice, a quieting of the mind, peace and profound silence.
